Scientists Make Fuel from CO2 Emissions and Sunlight

This item was filled under [ Energy, science ]

Scientists from Sandia National Labs have successfully field-tested a machine that uses solar energy to convert CO2 waste from power plants into fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.

Cylindrical in shape, the device has both a hot and cold chamber with 14 Frisbee-like rings in the middle. The rings’ outer edges–made of iron oxide–are solar heated to 2,700 degrees which forces the composite to lose oxygen atoms.

As the rings rotate (one revolution a minute), they move in towards the cool chamber. There, carbon dioxide is added and the iron oxide composite takes back its missing oxygen atoms. The resulting carbon monoxide would be used in creating a synthesized liquid combustible fuel.

Thanksgiving or Black Friday warm-up?

As you sit there, basking in a tryptophan daze or pumpkin-pie induced coma, are you thinking about all the wonderful things for which you are thankful this time of the year? Or, are you secretly plotting your Black Friday plan of attack for all your holiday gifts?

If it’s the latter, there are a few tools you might want to add to your holiday shopping arsenal. Slickdeals.net will fill you in on how many special deals are at a variety of stores.

Another helping hand comes from The Invisible Hand. Download this free (Firefox-only) software and while you’re shopping online, it will be searching out better deals from other retailers. It doesn’t have each and every online store in the world, but it does have a wide selection. It looks for lower prices as you’re shopping, and it even seeks out prices when you google a product. Get it at GetInvisibleHand.com

The easiest for most folks is to just head over to the Black Friday deals on Facebook; just click here. Twitter more your speed? Click here for your Twitter Black Friday updates from the Shopping Blog.

Or, you can simply stay home and enjoy the company of friends and family. That’s my plan. Happy Thanksgiving!

SWITCH screwdriver a simple, credible idea

SWITCH screwdriver a simple, credible idea

One of the best parts of writing about technology is the vaporware that seems to ooze from every pore of the Internet. The truth, however, is that many of these artists’ impressions will only ever be just that — artists’ impressions. So concepts that are simple and eminently workable, such as this SWITCH screwdriver, have more of a chance of being manufactured.

Designed by Jiangdang University students Liu Yunlong, Jia Peng, Cheng Peng, Wang Dongdong and Xin Yaoyao, the SWITCH has a shaft that can lock into place at 90 degrees to the handle, making it easier to tighten screws to their most secure. Okay, so it can’t do all the things that some tools do, but you’ve got to give it some kudos — after all, pricewise, the SWITCH will cost you about one hundredth of one of these.

Shadow Dextrous Hand grabs attention at Tokyo robot event

Another standout at this week’s International Robot Exhibition 2009 in Tokyo is the Shadow Dextrous Hand along with the CyberGlove. The robotic hand can be operated remotely by a human wearing the sensor glove to perform actions as delicate as cradling an egg, changing a light bulb or writing with a pen.

Developed by the UK-based Shadow Robot Company, the hand is capable of up to 24 distinct movements that mirror that of a real human hand. You can see video of the Shadow Dextrous Hand in action here.

World’s first osmotic power plant opens in Norway

World's first osmotic power plant opens in Norway

Osmotic power, you say? That’s exactly what brings the juice in one of Norway’s Statkraft plants, which opened yesterday. According to the company, the plant generates electricity thanks to a bank of cells that force osmosis:

“The plant generates power by exploiting the energy available when fresh water and seawater are mixed. Osmotic power is a renewable and emissions-free energy source that Statkraft has been researching into for 10 years and that will be capable of making a substantial global contribution to eco-friendly power production.”

It looks like the technology stills needs a bit of time to mature, though, according to Statkraft, “the global potential of osmotic power is estimated to be 1,600-1,700 TWh per annum, equivalent to 50 percent of the EU’s total power production,” and plants can be installed anywhere where fresh water streams into the sea.

Will it save the world’s energy crisis? Probably not — at least, not yet. It is another option, though, for clean, renewable energy.
