'Amatoya' ATV wages war on fire with dual water cannons

From designer Liam Ferguson comes the “Amatoya,” a two-man, two-cannon off-road ATV that is “more military in its approach” in the war on fire. If ever made to Ferguson’s specifications, the buggy would combine maneuverability, high-tech extras to help identify the heart of the blaze, and survivability to see it through a fire. A big downside would be that it can’t hold as much water as some of the other options out there, but it’d certainly be a robust (not to mention cool-looking) way to fight big blazes.

Naruto Shuriken cellphone strap is for people who live dangerously

Look, fancy cellphone straps are all well and good, but if you’re talking about something that’s going to go in your pocket maybe you should consider something other than the four-pronged blade of death. Yee-ikes.

Time Inc tries to rescue magazines with tablet publishing

In case you haven’t heard, the publishing industry isn’t doing so hot right now. Magazine especially are being hit hard, what with the internet existing and all. But they won’t take it lying down! No sir. Just take a look at Time Inc’s “Manhattan Project.”

This turns out to be an interactive magazine that can work on tablet computers. It’ll allow you to organize your magazine in whatever order you want to read it in, then flip through it using the touchscreen. Sounds interesting, I guess, but don’t websites offer some pretty similar functionality? If not more functionality? This may not be the savior the industry is looking for, but time will tell.

Are we there yet? Disney’s highway system predictions from 50 years ago

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

“Magic Highway USA” is a Disney cartoon that aired back in 1958 and showed the kind of good ol’ fashioned future that was all the rage back then. What did people have to look forward to? Color-coded and air conditioned highways, roads that are built instantly by lumbering vehicles, and — something we’re not so far from anymore — self-driving cars.

There are even some familiar technologies in there, such as rear-view video cameras and “pleasure vehicles,” which are basically RVs. And, of course, some wildly impractical predictions, such as cylindrical towers ringed by one solid elevator that is supposed to quickly serve hundreds of offices and carports. Check it out in its entirety in the video above.

iPhone universal remote: There’s an app for that

iPhone universal remote: There's an app for that

Here’s yet another thing the iPhone can do: it’s a universal remote. This ThinkFlood RedEye system includes a dock that communicates with your iPhone via WiFi, creating those infrared (IR) signals that your AV components obey.

Like our favorite Logitech Harmony 900 remote, the RedEye’s macro operation is sophisticated, letting you create “actions” that turn on multiple components for, say, watching TV, or watching a Blu-ray disc. You can arrange the buttons on the touchscreen however you want, and you can even use multitouch slides to control functions such as volume.

Besides its steep $188 price, the only disadvantage we see is that when you’re watching TV, it’s better to have physical buttons that you can operate without looking at the remote. But that eyes-free multitouch function takes care of channel changing and volume, the main functions you use while watching TV. Nice. Take a look at the video of the RedEye in action:

Target gift card transforms into tiny R/C shopping cart

Target, we’re impressed. You take one of the most profitable items in your store, and turn it into a cute, super-fun remote-controlled car. The remote looks like a piece of cheese, and when you detach it (and a little Target shopping cart with a mouse inside) from the gift card, it lets you wirelessly move the tiny vehicle backward and forward.

It’s no wonder Target can afford to do this — stores make billions on the fact that a large percentage of gift cards are never redeemed. The Remote Controlled Gift Card is available in amounts between $25 and $1000. At least you get some value out of this one if you don’t redeem it.

Attaching a SLR lens to your iPhone probably not worth it

Attaching a SLR lens to your iPhone probably not worth it

ILM Research Engineer Bhautik Joshi wanted to juice up his iPhone’s camera. So, of course, he took it apart, put in a bunch of stuff from a DVD player in order to get it to accept the images from a huge lens, and then duct taped that sucker on there.

And the results of all this work? Well, not that great, actually. It turns out, a fancy lens only really makes great pictures when it’s attached to a good camera with a good sensor. Who’d have thought? But hey, at least ol’ Bhautik has the least portable iPhone ever now.

Tata To Introduce Hybrid Version of Nano

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

The producer of the “world’s cheapest car,” the Tata Group, has announced its plans to produce a hybrid Nano. According to the company, the hybrid Nano will allow them to join the dozens of automakers that are producing hybrid vehicles. The company is India’s largest auto maker and Americans may be most familiar with its Jaguar Land Rover brand.

However, this is not the company’s first foray into the new green car sector, as earlier this year, the company announced that it may begin selling its Indica Vista EV, all-electric vehicle in Europe as soon as the end of this year.
