DVD projector lets you watch movies anywhere, no TV required

Look, this little portable projector with a built-in DVD player isn’t going to win any awards for picture quality at nerdy home theater websites. But the fact of the matter is that you can plug this thing in, pop in a DVD, and be watching a movie on a 50-inch screen in about 3 minutes with it.

It’s not something you’re going to want to base your home theater setup around, but if you want the ability to watch a movie on any surface at any time, you could do a lot worse.

Chevy Volt Investment in Detroit Now $700 Million

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

GM has announced that it is investing another $336 million to fix up its Hamtramck assembly plant in Detroit, now bringing its total Detroit plant investment in building the Volt extended-range electric car to $700 million.

First they’ll clear out the cobwebby remains of the Cadillacs and the Buick Lucernes they used to build there, and then they’ll rework those assembly lines to start rolling out something more in line with the times.

The American people are not asking for so much. Just an electric car with four wheels that we can fit at least a few kids into, that can be fueled with electrons from the solar panels we’ll soon have on our garages.

Dell Vostro v13 laptop: Cheap and pretty

Dell Vostro v13 laptop: Cheap and pretty

Dell still has us in deep-want mode for one of those elegant Adamo XPS laptops, but we just can’t get over their way-too-high price. You can imagine our astonishment when we saw the Dell Vostro V13, looking a whole lot like that line of svelte Adamos, but costing a mere fraction of their price, starting at $450. Do we no longer have to choose between two of the following: good, fast, and cheap?

Could be. You get a lot for your money, — the 13.3-inch-screened Vostro V13 brings respectable specs. At .65 inches, it’s plenty thin, and weighs a mere 3.5 pounds. Processor choices include a 1.2GHz Celeron, 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo, or 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo, and there’s even room for other niceties on board such as an Ethernet port, eSATA, and SD and ExpressCard slots.

It’s great to see Dell bringing high design down into the lower end. We’re starting to think that before too long, all laptops will be designer-gorgeous. It’s about time.

Boxee Box looks anti-boxy, brings web video to your living room

For those of you still reluctant to place some sort of PC next to your TV, Boxee wants to bring the vast wellspring of Internet video to you, too. Here’s our first look at the Boxee Box, an attractive little connected digital video player that’s made by D-Link. It’ll cost $200 and will be available in the second quarter of 2010.

Take a look at the reverse side of this asymmetrical cube, and you’ll see an HDMI output, Ethernet port, built-in Wi-Fi, a couple of USB ports, and it’s all controlled by an RF remote. Sounds like it’s good and ready for a well-appointed living room or home theater.

Or you could just tape a tiny PC to the back of your TV and have access to Hulu and the rest of the Web without any intermediaries getting in your way. Oh, and you could still use Boxee in its highly capable software-only form — an updated version is now in beta.

6 gifts for if we lived in the retro tomorrow of yesterday

Once upon a time we thought we’d live in domed cities, piloting flying cars around while our homes were cleaned by robotic servants. We’d work three hours a day, three days a week just like in The Jetsons, and everything would be as bright and pristine as an iPod.

Launching a car from a catapult is about the closest we’ve come to getting them to fly reliably. So, what if all that futurist optimism actually paid off? Well, you’d probably give people gifts like these — click Continue for six gifts we’d give if that good ol’ world of tomorrow was actually today.

Dragon Dictation speech recognition, now on iPhone

We’re big fans of Dragon NaturallySpeaking speech recognition software for Windows, and now that same dictation engine is the underpinnings of Dragon Dictation software on the iPhone. Just like its desktop counterpart, it types whatever you say, and its accuracy is remarkable. In fact, I used it to type this post, with accuracy approaching 98%. Not bad.

After you’ve spoken your piece, you can copy that text to the clipboard, or send it to an email or a text message. It’s limited in the number of words you can dictate at a time, takes a few seconds to process, and it’s hard to tell when you’ve run out of room. But hey, what do you want for free? It’s a great way to fire off a quick email or tweet, turning talk into type as if by magic.

German Researchers Build Diesel Engine With Few Emissions

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

Diesel engines hold a lot of promise, especially the ones in use over in Europe. They make more torque than their petrol cousins, usually come equipped with turbochargers, and tend to emit fewer emissions in low-sulfur form.

Researchers at a lab in Munich, Germany, have built a turbocharged diesel engine that they hope will emit less than 5 milligrams of soot and 80 milligrams of nitrogen per kilometer without resorting to a catalytic converter. Lofty goals, but they are making good headway.

Mayor Gavin Newsom introduces EV-charging stations in San Francisco.

Printer-style kitchen appliance the toast of Design Awards

Printer-style toasters are, you might think, no great shakes — hell, there’s a slew of versions that actually “print” designs on the bread — but this version is absolutely gorgeous. Designed by student Othmar Mühlebach to look rather like an inkjet printer, this toaster won second prize at the Berner* Design Awards.

What is it about DVICE and toasters? I think we can safely say that we’re a little bit obsessed by them, but maybe it’s got something to do with the ones with legs from a certain cult TV series.

*Let’s hope it doesn’t do that to the bread, eh?

Portland Oregon Works to Develop Best Practices for Electric Vehicle Adoption

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

While many are suffering burnout from the overwhelming amount of EV discussion as of late, the conference hosted by Portland State University and Portland General Electric last month was different.

Called “EV Road Map: Preparing Oregon for the Introduction of Electric Vehicles,” the event was one of the first to set the stage for real rollout and testing of citywide electric vehicle adoption.

The conference brought together many of the area’s electric vehicle stakeholders to discuss and begin planning for EVs in the region. These stakeholders included OEMs such as Nissan, Toyota, and smart USA, as well as Portland General Electric, local business associations, the local university, many city and county leaders including the Mayor of Corvallis, OR, charging station providers, and fleet managers.

Sanyo debuts solar and lithium ion-powered electric vehicle

As the ecology-focused, multi-national COP 15 conference in Copenhagen gets under way Sanyo has unveiled its latest green energy machine. Scheduled to go on display at the Eco Products 2009 International Exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight tomorrow, the Solar Electric Vehicle is powered by Sanyo solar panels and lithium ion batteries.

The amazing feature of the vehicle is that it only needs 16 hours to charge and just half that if charged via 100 volt AC outlet. The Sanyo car will be available for test drives at the company’s booth in the Green Energy Park at the conference this week.

Earth’s Moon

During its mission, the Galileo spacecraft returned a number of images of Earth’s only natural satellite. Galileo surveyed the moon on Dec. 7, 1992, on its way to explore the Jupiter system in 1995-1997. This color mosaic was assembled from 18 images taken by Galileo’s imaging system through a green filter. On the upperleft is the dark, lava-filled Mare Imbrium, Mare Serenitatis (middle left), Mare Tranquillitatis (lower left), and Mare Crisium, the dark circular feature toward the bottom of the mosaic. Also visible in this view are the dark lava plains of the Marginis and Smythii Basins at the lower right. The Humboldtianum Basin, a 400-mile impact structure partly filled with dark volcanic deposits, is seen at the center of the image. Image Credit: NASA/JPL/USGS
