Picture table lets you hide your kitchen table in plain sight

If you’re tight on space in your apartment, it can be tough to find room for a kitchen table. Well, if you want to have somewhere to eat other than your coffee table, take a look at this ingenious Picture Table.

The Picture Table is like a normal table, but when you want to have some space back after you eat, it flips up onto the wall and becomes a large frame. It actually looks pretty nice up there, and it’s a really clever idea for small spaces.

Finally, a classy-looking humidifier

Humidifiers are pretty utilitarian gadgets. They usually aren’t designed to look all that pretty, instead focusing on turning water into vapor so you don’t wake up with dry sinuses in the middle of the night.

But the Cube Steam Humidifier? It does it with style. Shaped like a classy cube with a soft glowing light emanating from underneath. If you’re going to keep a device like this sitting out in your home, it might as well look nice, right?

Two fantastic photos, both world's highest rez

Get ready to feast your eyes. First we have a spherical photo that’s a mind-boggling 18 gigapixels large, letting you gaze at Prague in record-breaking resolution. It’s stitched together from 600 shots, resulting in what its makers say is the world’s highest-rez 360-degree image — 192,000 pixels wide by 96,000 pixels high. Whoa. That’s 18.4 billion pixels! Go to the image, click Full Screen and marvel at how you can zoom in on individuals, close enough to discern what brand of cellphone they’re using.

Then there’s our second example, the spectacular 26-gigapixel panorama of Dresden, Germany. It’s not a 360-degree photo, but its resolution is even higher than the Prague image. Shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a 400mm lens, this project employed a photo robot to take its 1,665 pictures, accomplishing all that shooting in a mere 172 minutes. A computer with 48GB of RAM and 16 processors took 94 hours to process the 102GB of raw data, busting out the largest picture in the world, with an incredibly high resolution of 297,500 x 87,500 pixels. This is just positively astounding.

Santa's sleigh gets a major upgrade

Santa’s reindeer-powered sleigh might have been impressive back in the 19th century, but these days it takes a bit more flash to get kids excited. I like this upgrade, envisioned by Land Rover’s designers.

I mean, how can you argue with a particle accelerator? And this thing looks downright fast, leaving old St. Nick time to spare after visiting all the world’s little boys and girls. Not too shabby, fat man.

3D glasses for HDTV to cost at least $75 a pair

3D glasses for HDTV to cost at least $75 a pair

A few weeks back, I warned potential Blu-ray and HDTV buyers to hold off because 3D HDTV is coming. Considering the buzz around Avatar, your inability to wait means no watching Cameron’s epic in 3D at home, which means IMAX-sized buyer’s remorse because you couldn’t wait for 3D-enabled (HDMI 1.4-equipped) gear, which is due to arrive next year.

We just got confirmation on that. LG told a bunch of Korean reporters it’ll have its 3D HDTVs out in the second half of 2010. The company predicts robust sales, estimating it’ll sell 400,000 3D HDTVs in 2010 (out of an expected 25 million total HDTVs worldwide) and 3.4 million in 2011. Sony says half the HDTVs it will sell in 2013 will be 3D.

But what about the glasses? Keep reading if you think they’re a 3D deal-breaker.

Humbling video: The Known Universe makes you feel like a speck

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

Thanks, American Museum of Natural History. You just put life into perspective for us, and you know, we don’t mind that our Solar System is nothing but an infinitesimal speck on the Milky Way galaxy, which is itself a mere dot in the grand cosmos.

The video is part of a new exhibition, Visions of the Cosmos: From the Milky Ocean to an Evolving Universe at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City, and it’s produced by Michael Hoffman and directed by Carter Emmart.

Most remarkably, the video only takes you to the known part of the universe. What else is out there, beyond the quasars? Now we’re feeling even smaller. It gives new meaning to the phrase “grand scheme of things,” launching into insignificance our complaint about how this video was placed on YouTube in a 4×3 aspect ratio instead of wide-screen 16×9.

Notion Ink Smartpad: slim, gorgeous, maybe real

Notion Ink Smartpad: slim, gorgeous, maybe real

Could 2010 be the year of the tablet PC? This Notion Ink SmartPad revs up the buzz another notch, rocking a 10.1-inch touchscreen with formidable power underneath. It runs Google’s Android OS, blasts 1080p video without even breathing hard, and its makers claim it can play HD video for eight hours before recharging. Beyond that, it’ll let you surf Wi-Fi for 16 hours. Bold braggadocio, indeed. We shall see.

The Smartpad’s innards could be an example of most of the tablet PCs we’ll see at CES 2010 three weeks from now, enabled by NVIDIA’s as-yet-unannounced Tegra 20 chipset. We’ve already had extensive experience with Tegra, driving the Zune HD’s OLED graphics that are so exquisitely beautiful and snappy. Making this Smartpad even more useful is its Pixel QI transflective display, operating in two modes: fully saturated color mode, and a high-contrast ePaper mode.

The Smartpad is oozing with high-style design, and it’s just .6 inches thick, weighing 1.7 pounds. It’s a little early to call this the winner of the CES tablet derby, because we expect many others to meet or top this high level of goodness. Will they be affordably priced? Will anyone want one? Is this just a bunch of vapor? Yes, yes, and no.

In Copenhagen, 14 of World’s Biggest Cities Commit to EVs

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

Fourteen of the world’s largest cities agreed to take steps over the coming year to make their cities more electric vehicle-friendly. The announcement was made at the ‘Climate Summit for Mayors’, which is being held alongside the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

Half the world’s population lives in cities that account for more than two-thirds of carbon emissions. And as California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger made the case in Copenhagen on Tuesday at the Climate Summit for Mayors during the UN COP15 climate summit cities and other sub-national units of government will play a critical role in implementing the kind of innovative solutions necessary to clean up our transportation infrastructure in a carbon-constrained world. In that vein, a group of fourteen of the world’s largest cities took a step in that direction in Copenhagen on Wednesday.

Eyes Wide Shut: Earth’s Vital Signs Soon to Go Unmeasured as Satellites Fail

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

Satellites aren’t built to last forever, so it’s not a big surprise that the third and last laser on NASA’s Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) quit working on October 11, outlasting its designed mission length by three and a half years. Since its launch in 2003 ICESat has been a critical instrument for continuously monitoring how much ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland are contributing to the rise of the world’s oceans and how much the swath of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean is thinning–both of which are occurring faster than projected. Spoon-Chopsticks hybrid not as sexy as BSG’s Number Six

Spoon-Chopsticks hybrid not as sexy as BSG's Number Six

Our very own Adam Frucci is a master at discovering weird eating implements. While I’m sure none of you have forgotten Spock’s spork, when it comes to the trongs, allow me to refresh your memories. Well, Frooch, suck on this. A spoon-chopstick combo that can only lead to what I, and perhaps Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson, might refer to as a gastronomic malfunction.

Designed by Aissa Logerot, the Spoopstick (yes, I named it myself) consists of a small bowl-like receptacle with two holes in the end. You can use the bowl alone for your soya-wasabi combo, or as a spoon for your Miso soup when you insert the chopsticks into the holes. And there’s even a little toothpick add-on which permits the (discreet) post-prandial picking of fangs. Discreet, I said.
