Intel Infoscape flaunts jaw-dropping graphics

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

When we shot this video of Intel Infoscape at CES 2010, we couldn’t believe what we were seeing: a mere laptop driving two 7-foot screens, displaying 576 cubes hooked up to 20,000 info sources, including 20 live video feeds. Seems impossible. Touch one of the cubes, and an infobox displaying that content tumbles forward. Wow.

“Take THAT, NVIDIA,” says Intel to its chiphead nemesis. The techno-tour de force is “powered by a single all new 2010 Core i7 processor w/ Intel Hyper-Threading technology and Intel HD graphics,” crows Intel. Of course, graphics giant NVIDIA has processors that can do this kind of stuff, too, but it’s never been displayed with such drama.

This was a mind-blowing demo of the Core i7 processor, handling boatloads of data and graphics at the same time. The graphics on the giant screens were a tons of fun to move around with their uncanny quickness and smooth motion, and the whole thing felt super responsive, Giving us a peek into the future, it seemed a lot like that computer screen in the movie Minority Report. It was the most spectacular demo we saw at CES 2010.

GelaSkins with Marvel and Nat Geo: protect your gear with style

GelaSkins with Marvel and Nat Geo: protect your gear with style

Gelaskins is a Canadian company that makes stunning tech covers for a variety of gear, including iPhones, gaming devices, and laptops. You can even bling out your Kindle. Their products have always been attractive, more like works of art than just a bland, monochrome skin. Now, they’ve teamed up with Marvel Comics and National Geographic to produce a line of skins that are really unique.

The removable vinyl protective layer doesn’t offer any cushioning, but it does protect against scratches. If you don’t like any of the available artwork, you can also upload your own. Prices range from $15 – $30, depending on the size and complexity. After spending so much money on fancy gear, isn’t it worth it to spend a few bucks more to protect it, especially if you can make it look so very good?

On the heels of Chevy’s mobile app blitz for the Volt, BMW followed up by showing off their very own iPhone app. Chevy has one leg up on BMW as the Volt app is available for the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android. But there is one flaw, you can’t yet buy a Volt…BMW, FTW!

The BMW M Power Meter Application uses the iPhone’s native accelerometer to measure speed, acceleration and your acceleration to a specific speed. But the best part, you don’t have to own a BMW to use it–and it’s free! How often can you say that about something from BMW?

CES Friday: Android-powered microwaves and other ridiculous gadgetry

CES Friday: Android-powered microwaves and other ridiculous gadgetry

Walking around the convention floor, you frequently run into gadgets that make you think, “Yep, I’m at CES.” Need an example? Take a gander at that microwave up there running Android. Sure, we knew it was coming. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t kind of funny to see a microwave running Android, though.

The company behind the unholy union, Touch Revolution, also tossed the mobile OS on a washing machine. In theory, that’d also mean apps that would make sense on either, making for more robust options all around. An app for nuking hot pockets, anyone?

That’s not the only craziness we saw. See that first item in the gallery below? Yeah, those headphones have a little surprise for you. Check them out!

Revealing Emperor’s new gaming and workstation

Revealing Emperor's new gaming and workstation

You thought 3D would be the ultimate gaming environment? Maybe, but the Alien pilot seat-like Emperor 1510 gaming and workstation may be – is there something higher than “ultimate”?

The Emperor is a stainless steel enclosure that can be tricked out with three screens, surround sound, adjustable seat and leg rests, an adjustable keyboard tray, inputs for a Mac or PC, and can recline up to 15 degrees. It can be customized with different colors and other accoutrements.

You’ll never want to leave it, whether you’re playing a game or glazing over a spreadsheet. The guy in the pictures looked as if he’d been there all day, and didn’t care. There’s even a cup holder in the keyboard tray.

Depending on how much you load it up, it’ll run you $5,000 to $10,000. You can pre-order by Monday at NovelQuest.

Best-ever portable charger?

Best-ever portable charger?

Admittedly this looks and sounds really low-tech and cheesy, but I’m totally going to get one when it comes out. It’s a portable USB charger from a company called Meggaboom that you power by winding the handle. Never worry about having spare power again – just remember to bring an extra USB cable with you.

Fully wound, it’ll re-charge an iPod one and a half times. It’s got tape on it because it’s an early prototype, so we don’t know how many winds it takes to recharge its internal battery, how long an iPod re-charge takes, or if you can wind-and-charge simultaneously. In all events, it’ll go on sale sans tape (hopefully) in April for $60.

Bible comes to life with Glo

Bible comes to life with Glo

Glo is nothing like the old testament of the print variety. It’s a digital version of the bible with stunning high-definition imagery of biblical sights. A virtual representation of Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulcher shows panoramic photos of the inside down to the frescos in detail.

Unlike wading through pages of scripture, Glo is organized both by order of the big book or by geography through a topographical map. Fly overhead in a manner similar to Live Earth and zero in on biblical locations to see HD video and documentaries, 360 degree photo representations, and photos of works of art.

At its core, Glo from Immersion Digital is a bible in traditional form; an atlas with biblical events as points of interest; a timeline of each event of significance; a topical resource for sparking discussion; and a rich media experience. I hope to learn history in a way my parents and Sunday school never taught me.

Air Keyboard controls cursor with an easy tilt

Here’s another contender for best home theater keyboard. The latest version of Cideko’s Air Keyboard is scarcely larger than your palm, but gives you full keyboard and mouse control of your home theater PC. The wireless keyboard also gives you transport controls for all your media, while the motion sensor inside moves the mouse cursor as you tilt the keyboard.

It’s a prototype thus far — we tried its predecessor with the same tech inside, and it’s easy to use and works well. This latest model has rounded styling that felt just right in our hands, and adds earphone and microphone ports. Cideko reps say the Air Keyboard ships this summer at an undetermined price. One to watch.

Edifier Luna 5 Encore, the mother of all iPhone docks

If the good looks of this Edifier Luna 5 Encore iPod/iPhone dock don’t grab you, its thundering bass will kick you in the ass, rapidly reminding you who’s boss. There’s enough room in that rounded shape to fit 5 speakers, including a 32-watt sub and 4 others powered by 20 watts.

The result? Huge sound that works on a variety of music — we plugged in our iPhone and took it for a ride at CES 2010, and it’s just seriously powerful.

Too bad it retails for $299, but don’t worry, you can find it for less. Even at $299, once you’ve heard its rip-roaring bass and crystalline highs, you”ll agree it’s money well spent.

Tiny Optoma pico projector is best and brightest yet

Tiny Optoma pico projector is best and brightest yet

Those ultra-small pico projectors are getting even more pico, and Optoma’s latest is a whole lot brighter than last year’s model. We got our hands on the PK 301 at CES 2010 today, and our admiration for these teeny tiny shinys continues to grow.

The PK 301 is surprisingly bright for its size. Its output is quoted at 50 lumens — that’s a lot more than the 11 Lumens of the first Optoma pico projector, the PK 101. The PK 301′s 854×480 imager looks bright enough to enjoy a movie, and certainly adequate for biz presentations.

We like the way it was pitched to us as the “ultimate netbook companion.” These pico projectors have certainly come a long way since their debut two years ago. Look for the PK 301, the best one we’ve seen yet, to ship in late April for $399.

Scosche tapSTICK adds controls your iPod shuffle

The iPod shuffle is great, but controlling it, especially while on the go, is pretty near impossible. Scosche has a clever way to control and protect your precious shuffle.

The tapSTICK slips over the shuffle, clipping into the headphone jack. It has three large buttons that offer a variety of controls. One button for volume up, one for volume down, and the center button is play/pause with a single click, and next track with a double click. It also has VoiceOver support.

The tapSTICK sells for $30 and comes in black, white, or clear, so you can showcase the color of your shuffle. Use it while you work out, or in the car – anytime you want to quickly and easily use your shuffle.

BlueBuds Bluetooth earbuds for wireless music on the go

Sure, it’s great to have your entire music library on your iPhone. But, it really sucks to have to wire it to earphones to listen to your favorite tunes, especially when you’re working out. BlueBuds by JayBird give you a wireless Bluetooth connection for any Bluetooth-enabled device.

The one-inch stereo buds have a built-in microphone so you can easily switch when you need to take a call. Playtime is 4 hours for music or talk. For folks who need something more substantial, there are also a pair of Bluetooth headphones with a sturdier headband. Price for the BlueBuds is expected to be $130 when it ships this April.

So, jog away without the hassle of headphone cables getting in your way, or worse, getting sweaty and nasty, but just in case, JayBird offers a lifetime warranty against sweat. This is a company that believes in athletes. Or anyone else who sweats.
