A bold new frontier for bike lanes: the sky

A bold new frontier for bike lanes: the sky

Bulgarian architect Martin Angelov wants to put bike lanes in a pretty weird place: the skies above the street. Before you dismiss the image above as a flight of fancy, he’s actually put more than a little thought into the idea of bikers riding around on wires trapeze-style.

To keep the riders safe, each biker would attach to the aerial path by way of a handlebar-level wire. Then you’d simply ride along in a bowled-out bar that keeps the tire secure. There’d be no passing, of course, and it leaves one to wonder how you’d get on or off — or if it’d only connect two points, rather than letting people come and go.

Check out more of the safety gear in the gallery below.

DIY non-lethal mousetrap using only a toilet paper tube

DIY non-lethal mousetrap using only a toilet paper tube

Blogger Chris “MacGyver” Glass isn’t bothered all that much by mice. What does irk him, though, is when the little guys disrupt a pizza dinner by scaling a chair and exploring the inside of his shirt sleeve. That’s the kind of surprise that would have most people reaching for a brown bag and hammer, but Glass had a better, non-lethal idea. It starts with a toilet paper tube:

Here’s how I caught the critter:

1. Get a toilet paper tube and crease two lines to form a flat sided tunnel.
2. Put a treat on one end of the tube: A cracker and dab of peanut butter works great.
3. Get a tall (at least 20 inches) bucket. A trash can works well.
4. Balance the tube precariously on the edge of a table or counter with the treat hanging directly over the tall sided receptacle.
5. The mouse will scurry to the treat (they like tunnels) and fall into the trap.

Set the fella loose at least a mile away from your abode.

Postnote: It worked within the hour.

Voilà! One mouse released back into the wild. He even has a solution for folks who don’t have suitable counters:

Also, folks have asked how this could work if you don’t have a counter or table. Simple: get a piece of cardboard and crease it to make a ramp up to a small trashcan.

$400,000 watch tells time really well, one assumes

There’s no denying that the HD3 Complication Black Pearl watch is striking. It’s got all sorts of complicated, gear-related workings inside, all visible through the face. It’s got a sexy black and red color scheme, and it clearly is a complex work of art.

But hoo boy, $400,000 is steep. Sure, only 11 of them are being produced, but it’s still surprising to me that they’ll be able to sell that many at such a high price. But I guess it’s just evidence that a world exists where such things are normal. We normal people just don’t have access to it.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Could Go Hybrid

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

Think about all the cool cars in Mitsubishi’s lineup.

Chances are, you could only think of one; the Lancer Evolution.

Turbocharged, 300 horsepower, all-wheel drive; the perfect prescription for New England snowfall and the doldrums of conventional family sedans. It has worked for Mitsubishi for years now, and a cult of fanboys (and girls) has cropped up around this car. So why would Mitsubishi consider making it a hybrid?

Cash For Clunkers 2.0?

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

Depending on who you ask, Cash for Clunkers was either a spectacular success, or a spectacular failure.

These are the facts though. Cash for Clunkers helped sell 690,000 car sales in 30 days, at the cost $3 billion to taxpayers. While overall auto sales are down in 2009 compared to 2008, December was a strong finish for almost every brand. In the four months since the program, car sales have also been up as a whole. Chrysler and General Motors are out of bankruptcy. 2010 is looking like a much better year for car buyers.

Still, the question lingers. Are we going to get a second round of Cash for Clunkers?

Is a guitar with a touchscreen instead of strings still a guitar?

Is a guitar with a touchscreen instead of strings still a guitar?

Call me crazy, but I don’t think a guitar that replaces strings with a touchscreen is going to catch on. Sure, the Misa Digital Guitar is striking looking, but come on. If you’re going to make a touchscreen instrument, why cram it into a guitar body?

But hey, I’m no musician, so what do I know? The Misa is basically a fancy MIDI controller that you can interface with software on your PC. Alternately, you can just use said software on your PC and use a normal guitar. It’s up to you!

U.S. Army’s New Diesel-Electric Hybrid Takes the Stage in Detroit

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide and the U.S. Army TARDEC have partnered to develop the new Clandestine Electric Reconnaissance Vehicle.

The U.S. Army proudly showed off its new Clandestine Electric Reconnaissance Vehicle (CERV) at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last week, and let’s just say that on looks this diesel-electric hybrid can’t compete with eye candy like Toyota’s new FT-CH Prius concept. But, at least it gets you where you want to go – with a 25% reduction in fuel consumption.

As the owner of the world’s largest fleet of vehicles, the U.S. Army is on an all-out drive to adopt sustainable new fuels and hybrid technologies to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. The CERV is just one part of a  U.S. military research and development program that includes energy storage, power and thermal management, robotics, and survivability as well as vehicle design.

Hybrids Versus Muscle Cars: What Do Americans Want?

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

I’m going to answer my own question and say both.

It’s true. According to Kelley Blue Book’s list of most searched cars, perennial favorites the Honda Civic and Accord topped the list. The Prius came in at #8, within spitting distance of the Camaro which came in at #12. In fact, if you look at the different lists from websites across the web, muscle cars are pretty consistently high on the search lists, as are hybrids and fuel efficient models like the Smart ForTwo.

So can America have its cake and eat it too?

Dining room table turns into a secret house

There’s a lot to love about this table, dubbed the “Daily Shelter.” I mean, who doesn’t want to crawl into their own personal hiding spot from the world every now and then? And right after a contentious family meal, no less. Sure, it’s designed for little kids, but I don’t think there’s an age limit on loving secret forts.

Space Shuttle engines: free to a good home

Space Shuttle engines: free to a good home

Now that the Space Shuttle missions are ending, NASA is cleaning house. While complete shuttles are for sale at 50% off “retail,” the deal of the century must be the free engines. These spare engines were originally offered for sale for between $400,000 and $800,000 back in 2008. With the shuttle program coming to a close and no takers on the sale, just pay the price of shipping, and you could have your very own engine. Who would be better – FedEx or UPS?

Want the full Monty? For a discounted, bargain-basement price of a mere $28.8 mill, you can purchase your very own Shuttle — the Endeavour and Atlantis are both available, and the shuttle Discovery is heading to the Smithsonian. The prototype shuttle Enterprise, which never made it to space, might also be up for grabs. The cost includes transportation from Kennedy Space Center to a major airport. So far, about 20 institutions have expressed interest.

Want a shuttle? The deadline to make an offer is February 19, 2010, and delivery will be by 2012. Do you have to pay more to ship by Priority Mail?

Onzo kit helps track your green energy goals

Part of “going green” means monitoring your energy output, a task now made infinitely easier with the introduction of the Onzo from the UK. The kit is composed of a display that shows your current consumption and sends that information wirelessly to a sensor unit.

The device can store up to ten years of information and also offers a USB connection to your home PC. Although the design is final, the company has yet to firm up a price for the product that is scheduled to go into production later this year.
