This item was filled under [ Technology ]

Which is more important, an endangered bird or sustainable energy ? Scion Considering a Small Pickup Truck (Again)

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

The compact pickup truck segment of the auto market has been in a weird place lately. It wasn’t so long ago that it seemed like every manufacturer was fighting over who had the most youthful, appealing, “cool” small pickup. Since the early 2000’s though, competition in the segment has dropped and stumbled, leaving only two real competitors for the small truck king; the very dated Ford Ranger, and the current sales king, the Toyota Tacoma.

Rumors have been swirling about the Ranger’s demise for years now, and perhaps Toyota smells blood. The Japanese brand is said to be considering a small pickup truck for its floundering Scion brand.

Chevy Volt Will Sell In Low 30’s and be Profitable: GM CEO

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

The Chevy Volt is in many ways GM’s flagship into the future. Many people are critical of the car, saying it doesn’t go far enough on electric power. Others are critical of its cost, which—between media speculation and hints from GM execs—has ranged from below $30,000 to more than $40,000 before tax breaks. In the past, even GM has seemed rather resigned to lose money when the Volt first comes out, rather than expect to turn a profit.

But in a recent interview with GM-Volt.com, GM CEO Ed Whitacre revealed that GM will sell the Volt in the low $30,000 range, and they will make money off of it. Imagine that… GM making money!

100 Percent Renewable? One Danish Island Experiments with Clean Power [Slide Show]

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

TRANEBJERG, Samso, Denmark–It can seem as if the icy, cutting wind off the North Sea never stops blowing on this Danish island in winter, bending back the grass, whipping straight the flags, and setting mammoth wind turbines to their stately spinning. That’s good news for Samso’s 4,000 or so inhabitants, seeing as they own shares in 20 of the 21 turbines that either tower over the island or rise from the offshore waters of the Kattegat Strait , which connects the Baltic and North seas.

Some people see wind turbines as eyesores or complain about the sound of their whirring blades, but Soren Hermansen, chief proselytizer for the island’s renewable energy experiment and director of the Samso Energy Academy , disagrees. "If you own a share in a wind turbine it looks better, it sounds better," he says. "It sounds like money in the bank."
