World’s largest yacht will be as long as two football fields

World's largest yacht will be as long as two football fields

In an interview with CNN, Berkeley March, a naval architect, unveiled “Project 1000,” or the plan to build the world’s biggest super yacht ever. At 656 feet in length, it’s almost as long as two football fields, which would surpass the world’s current biggest yacht — Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s 99-foot-long 560-foot-long “Eclipse.”

So how do you fill up all that space? With a double-decker cinema, a night club, helipad and more. Of course, all that floating luxury comes at a price, and that price is a pretty big number: 1 billion dollars. That’s 1,000,000,000.

I can think of a lot of things I’d want, and I still don’t think they’d add up to 1 billion dollars. What more could you possibly want than a movie theater and a night club on a floating island? “For example, the client could request gold furniture,” March explained to CNN.

Oh. Right. Silly me.

Gold furniture.

Artist Turning Hummer into horse-drawn carriage

This item was filled under [ News ]

Jeremy Dean is in the middle of a project where he will be turning a
Hummer into a horse-drawn carriage. It’s a commentary on what the future
could look like after an oil crisis and it’s also a pretty amazing mod.
I really hope the result is worth the $15k for the used H2 and the hours
put into it. …

Rally Fighter Takes Flight

This item was filled under [ Energy, Environment, News ]

I am a big fan of Local Motors and their crowd-sourced Rally Fighter. A custom vehicle with its own frame and body–built borrowing many bits from dozens of other cars–the Rally Fighter manages to merge fun and fuel efficiency in one cool-looking body. Plus, CEO Jay Rogers built it to prove that there is a [...]

Fiat 500 Could be On Sale in the U.S. at the End Of 2010

This item was filled under [ Energy, Environment, News ]

I remain on the fence regarding the Chrysler-Fiat merger. On the one hand, Chrysler needed saving and Fiat was willing to lend a hand (though no cash). On the other hand, Fiat’s reputation for reliability both here and abroad remains shaky at best. Fiat also shed over a billion dollars in 2009, and says it won’t make [...]

People Putting an Extra 50,000 Miles Or More On Their Cars

This item was filled under [ Energy, Environment, News ]

2009 was a pretty terrible year for auto sales, and the most obvious culprit is the economic downturn. While things are looking up for 2010 (ignoring the whole recall scandal blown entirely out of proportion), new car sales may not return to pre-recession levels for years, if ever. And while the economy may still be [...]

When Olympic champions are crowned at this year’s winter games in Vancouver, these elite athletes will be taking home more than just gold, silver or bronze medals–they will be playing a role in Canada’s efforts to reduce electronic waste . That’s because each medal was made with a tiny bit of the more than 140,000 tons of e-waste that otherwise would have been sent to Canadian landfills . [More]

World first: 747-mounted laser blasts missile out of the sky

World first: 747-mounted laser blasts missile out of the sky

For the first time ever, an airborne laser weapon mounted aboard a Boeing 747-400F blew up a sea-launched liquid-fueled ballistic missile. The light-speed laser beam shot “directed energy” from the Airborne Laser Testbed (ALTB), consisting of a Northrop Grumman higher-energy laser and a Lockheed Martin beam-and-fire control system. A

Using another lower energy laser to specifically target the missile, the megawatt-class laser locked onto that missile, “heating the boosting ballistic missile to critical structural failure.”

Dramatic stuff. This laser missile-killing tech actually works, despite budget cuts for the laser defense program. Before long, the system might be able to reach its full potential, taking out multiple targets at the speed of light. It sounds like the future just arrived.

Sea Caves Reveal Rapid Rise in Ancient Ocean Levels

This item was filled under [ News, science ]

Mallorca, Spain’s largest island, is not just a desirable place for a Mediterranean vacation; it’s also a treasure trove of the geologic record. That’s because of coastal caves that precisely record in stone formations sea level thanks to the island’s long-term geologic stability; it has been relatively unaffected by tectonics or glacial uplift or subsidence. Plus, these caves have a series of formations, known as speleothems , like stalagmites, scattered at various levels, both above and below present-day sea level, thereby offering a record in the carbonate crust left on them by the lapping waters of sea level over time. Hot rumors: TiVo interface to go all-HD, do more?

Hot rumors: TiVo interface to go all-HD, do more?

Big changes are afoot for TiVo. The company’s teasing March 2 as the big reveal date, but no need to wait — here’s a sneak preview from a confidential informant:

Full HD menus: TiVo’s been toying with this idea in beta for a couple of years now (see the picture above), so it’s about time we saw an all-HD interface fo’ reals. The new look is said to resemble that gorgeous Xbox dashboard that we simply love. Whoa. That would be a heck of a sight better than the current blown-up-and-stretched SD menus, looking like technology from a half decade ago.

Improved search: The beta TiVo Search is already pretty good, but it’s dog-slow. Let’s hope TiVo plans to speed that up. It needs to search more sources in addition to Amazon and a few other video-on-demand offerings — for instance, the Vudu library of near-1080p HDX video.

Phasing out Series2 hardware: This must be necessary because of the upcoming HD interface. Series2 is getting too old anyway, so backward compatibility is probably not practical for TiVo.

TiVo Premiere: We’ve been hearing rumblings about this new TiVo hardware for a while now, and it might have ATSC and CableCard support built-in. Could there be Tru2Way in the offing, delivering interactive services, games and such? We can only hope.

These are all rumors and speculation thus far, so don’t bet on any of this.

Hunter S. Thompson goes gonzo trying to work his home theater

This item was filled under [ Mobile, News, Technology ]

Gun-loving Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson was not the kind of guy you would want to get on the wrong side of, so imagine how the technicians at the video-install place felt when they picked up this phone message. He may have been a great writer, but even he couldn’t figure out how to work his new JVC DVD player. I dealt with plenty of angry customers during my days as an installer, but I’m sure glad it wasn’t me going out on the follow up call.

RIP, Hunter, you are missed.

WARNING! Hunter unleashes a tidal wave of profanity as he builds to a crescendo.

Keyboard lets you edit YouTube videos like a pro

Keyboard lets you edit YouTube videos like a pro

Any video pro will tell you that for quick accurate video editing, there’s nothing quite like having a real jog/shuttle wheel. Sure, all of the popular video editing software like Windows Movie Maker and Apple iMovie have on screen interfaces that let you do the same basic things, but they still require that you use a mouse and cursor to control things. The GR100 keyboard adds a classic style jog/shuttle wheel that you turn to move quickly through a clip, with an inner dial to locate the exact frame you want. A set of buttons around the dial provides shortcuts to all of the essential editing functions.

The GR100 is made by the Korean video software company CodeAct, so naturally it works with their GReditor, along with other popular edit suites like Adobe Premiere and Pinnacle Studio. It’s available in both Japanese and English versions for a pretty hefty $275.

What is NBC doing with 730,000 feet of cable at the Olympics?

This item was filled under [ Mobile, News, Technology ]

What is NBC doing with 730,000 feet of cable at the Olympics?

When the 2010 Olympic Winter Games begin in Vancouver tonight, the athletes won’t be the only ones nervous and excited about the outcome. Our sister company NBC has exclusive rights to the Vancouver Olympics, standing ready to bring the world’s first all-HD Winter Olympics into your homes with a gigantic assortment of some of the most advanced broadcast technology the world has ever known. We have the inside scoop on what you’ll see, and the mind-boggling numbers involved.

So what’s new? Among NBC’s newest innovations will be “Super Ski,” a graphic showing the exact line the leader took down the hill, giving you an easy comparison to the current skier. During aerial skiing and snowboarding events, you’ll see “StroMotion,” a strobe effect illustrating the path of a flying trick much better than you can see in real time. And the ski jumping event will show a virtual “Line to Beat,” showing the trajectory of the leader.

It takes a lot of people power and equipment to produce the 835 hours of glitzy television coverage you’ll see in the coming 16 days. While setting up for the big event, our NBC brethren compiled an impressive list of the sheer numbers involved in creating such a monumental 16-day broadcast. Continue reading, and you’ll see that there’s a whole lot more to putting together an Olympics broadcast than meets the eye:
