After posting about the 50 papercraft robots I couldn’t help but print

version of the dragon illusion that I’ve been meaning to make for years
now (and still haven’t). It only takes a few minutes to put together so
check it out. …

‘Color a Sound’ turns projector transparencies into sheet music

'Color a Sound' turns projector transparencies into sheet music

Boy, something like this would have made class a lot more interesting — and musical. Blair Neal’s “Color a Sound” uses transparent sheets (just like teacher used to use) sliding across an overhead projector to act as sheet music, while the different colors and shapes of markings act as the notes. You control the tempo yourself with a crank, and the projector-boombox can even change to making drum beats for something a little funkier.

Check out “Color a Sound” in action in the video below.

Designer takes ‘iPhone killer’ literally

Designer takes 'iPhone killer' literally

Designer Ronen Kadushin has finally gone and done it. He’s made a real “iPhone killer,” a combination of words that was all the rage not too long ago (disclosure: I was guilty of it, too). Now we’re all about iPad fightin’ here at DVICE.

In a presentation that takes more than a cue from Jobs (see the picture below), Kadushin unveiled his iPhonekiller, as he calls it: “Whenever a new hand held device, or new exciting smartphone hits the market, a question roars through the internets, tech blogs and news: Is this the iPhone killer?”

He continues: “I’d like to introduce you to the iPhonekiller… It’s amazing… It is an open design, you can download it from my website, produce and use it.”

Of course, that means you have to make it yourself, but yes, at long last, let it be known that Ronen Kadushin created the iPhonekiller.

Holy crap, we’ve got robot avatars now

Holy crap, we've got robot avatars now

There’s a big meeting across the country. What do you do?

1960: You fly there.
1980: You have a conference call.
2000: You do a video conference.
2010: You fire up your robot avatar at the location.

Pardon? Yep, it’s for real, folks. A company called Anybots has created a prototype of a robot that will serve as a person’s physical presence in a remote location. You log in through the Internet and after a few keystrokes the ‘bot, called QB, comes alive, leaving its charging station and ready to meet, brainstorm, greet visitors or just generally creep people out.

Japan to launch the world’s first solar-powered spacecraft

This item was filled under [ Mobile, News, Technology ]

Japan to launch the world's first solar-powered spacecraft

Japan is hoping to become the first nation on the planet to successfully deploy a solar-powered spacecraft. Named IKAROS (Interplanetary Kite-craft Accelerated by Radiation Of the Sun) and developed by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), IKAROS will first launch with the Venus Climate Orbiter AKATSUKI.

The solar sail part of the craft is composed of thin film solar cells with the spinning main body holding the craft’s shape via centrifugal force. Hopefully, the craft’s unfortunate name (harkening back to the legend of Icarus, who flew too close to the sun and perished as a result) will not serve as a mark of bad luck on the its maiden voyage. The launch is scheduled to stream live this Friday, May 21 at 6:30 a.m. Japan-time here.
