Second Generation Chevy-Badged EN-V Concept Launched

Last year GM showcased a trio of small personal-mobility pods called EN-V’s at the Shanghai Auto Show. These vehicles caused quite a stir, and GM has announced that it has begun work on a 2nd generation of EN-V vehicles that will wear the Chevy bowtie.

BREAKING: GM Announces Chevy Spark EV Coming to U.S. in 2013

GM has been accused of killing the electric car after its failed EV1 experiment…but things appear to have come full circle this morning as GM has announced it will be building a 100% electric car based on the Chevy Spark mini-car. And yes, they will sell it here in America.

Nissan Working on Ten-Minute Fast Charger

If electric vehicles are ever to be adopted en masse, they’re going to have to cut down on charging times drastically. Nissan obviously realizes this, and they are currently working on a system to fully charge a Leaf EV in ten minutes or less.

The Price of Oil: Shell Paid Nigerian Military to Violently Supress Protests

I don’t believe America went to war against Iraq for oil. That doesn’t mean Big Oil’s hands are clean though. Recently released reports show that on at least two occasions, Shell had paid the Nigerian miltary substantial sums of money and that same military brutally repressed an area that just happened to be protesting Shell.

American Students Set New Electric Vehicle Land Speed Record

The Bonneville Salt Flats may be the last place on Earth you’d expect to find alternative fuel vehicles. And yet an increasing number of pioneers are pushing the envelope and showing the world that green doesn’t mean slow. Students from Bringam Young University have set a new electric vehicle land speed record of 155 mph.

For the past decade, the best-selling hybrid SUV has been none other than the Ford Escape. Personally, I think it’s a cute car…if underpowered. Well, that won’t be a problem anymore, as Ford is dropping the hybrid model in place of two EcoBoost engine options, one of which will offer better highway MPG than the hybrid model.

Electric Airplane Flies 200 Miles on 0.5 Gallon Equivalent Per Passenger

They say flying is the safest form of transportation, but it is also a big-time contributor to global emissions. Now I’m not saying electric airplanes are going to take over the sky anytime soon, but the winner of NASA’s Green Flight Challenge did manage to fly an electric airplane 200 miles in under two miles, using the equivalent of half a gallon of gasoline per passenger.

Study: EV Subsidies Would Better Benefit Smaller Battery Packs

One major point of contention for electric vehicles is their reliance on government tax credits to bring down prices. A new study suggests that the government is going about these tax credits wrong, subsidizing EV’s and hybrids with big battery packs, when subsidizing vehicles with smaller packs would have more social and environmental benefits.

We can probably debate what counts as the world’s first “real” automobile, since the “De Dion Bouton Et Trepardoux Dos-A-Dos Steam Runabout” is more of a train without tracks than an actual car. But it is up for auction, and ran not on gasoline that would come to define the car…but on steam power.

Axeon Electric Battery Could Provide EV’s With 35% More Range

Until electric vehicles can provide the same range and convenience as today’s gas-powered automobiles, they will not find much of a mass market. UK-based Axeon has announced that their new battery pack could extend EV range by as much as 35% when compared with a lithium-ion pack of the same size.
