Tell us what you think of DVICE’s new look

Tell us what you think of DVICE's new look

You may have noticed that things look a little different around here. It’s true: DVICE just got a makeover. We love the results — not just because our new layout is shiny and new, but because it makes it easier to find what you’re looking for. We cut out a lot of moldy old links, put in some intuitive icons, and made the site friendlier to popular social networks. With a cherry on top.

What do you think of our new look? Are the colors too hot, too cold or just right? Are the icons too soft, too hard or just right? And when did this start sounding like a kid’s fairy tale? Let us know in the comments while we take a walk in the woods with our bear friends.

For the weekend: Every iPad parody we could find

This item was filled under [ Technology ]

It’s been a big week for the gadget world. But it’s been an even bigger one for the gadget-parody world. The iPad has inspired unprecedented ridicule worldwide, even for an Apple product. This level of derision is usually reserved for something with the word “Zune” somewhere in its name.

Continue reading for every graphic, video and feminine-hygiene joke we could find about the iPad. Feel free to add any we missed in the comments.

DVICE's 'Win Our CES Swag' contest winners announced

We know. We know! We’ve been taking our time on this. Trust us, it was worth it. The response to our “Win Our CES Swag” Twitter contest was so unexpectedly huge that we needed extra time to go through all the entries to make sure the prizes were awarded fairly. Also, the generosity of a few vendors resulted in some duplicated prizes, which allowed us to have a second place winner.

To the results: Second prize goes to Wyatt Yager of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Wyatt wins some Monster Cable Outlets To Go, a ClickFree device for backing up his PC, a pair of Etymotic earphones, a Jelfin mouse and more.

And our grand prize winner is none other than Candi Green of Glendale, California. Candi hit the mother lode: She wins a Flip UltraHD camcorder, a Jabra Stone Bluetooth earpiece, Dragon Naturally Speaking dictation software, an Energizer Energi To Go rechargeable battery, a rare Motorola “Hello” pillow, a DTS fleece jacket, Season 2 of Mad Men on Blu-ray, a Speck dust cover for the Kindle 2 and lots more.

Congratulations to Candi and Wyatt! You’re prizes are on their way. We loved the response to our contest and plan on holding a lot more of them this year. Stay close to our Twitter feed to get in the action.

Win tickets to Cirque du Soleil at tomorrow’s DVICE panel on battery tech

Win tickets to Cirque du Soleil at tomorrow's DVICE panel on battery tech

What’s the problem with batteries? Right, exactly: they run out of power too quickly. The solution? There are plenty, and five panelists — including reps from Motorola and Powermat — will be discussing the future of portable power on a CES panel moderated by one Peter Pachal, editor of this very site.

If you’re in Las Vegas and you want to check out the session, you’re in luck. We’re giving away four passes to our battery panel to anyone who can get to it. On top of that, one of those attendees will win two tickets to the Friday night’s show of Cirque du Soleil’s Love at the Mirage. We’ll pick the four attendees from anyone who sends an e-mail to dvicelovesbatteries@gmail.com with “I Love DVICE” in the subject by 8 p.m. Pacific Time tonight. Winners will pick up passes at the session, and we’ll give away the pair of Love tickets at the close of the panel. Good luck!

Win our CES swag on Twitter

Win our CES swag on Twitter

Here’s the not-so-well-kept secret about trade shows: They’re actually a great place to get free loot. Plenty of exhibitors at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show will be giving away gadgets, trinkets and gadgety trinkets. Sometimes they find a good home, but too often they end up in the bottom of some overworked writer’s laptop bag, lost and forgotten.

Not this year. Every piece of CES swag that lands into the hands of a DVICE team member goes into a pile. And that swag pile will be given away to one lucky reader. How to win this technological horn of plenty? Just follow us on Twitter, look for our contest tweets and follow the instructions. We’ll pick the winner at random after the show ends on Sunday. Good luck, tweeps!

CES 2010 starts tomorrow; DVICE all over it

The annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas starts late tomorrow, and DVICE will be live on the scene. Visit us regularly to see news and pictures of every breakthrough gadget, übersleek piece of gear and impossibly thin TV. All week long we’ll be blogging live from Vegas finding the greatest tech toys 2010 has to offer. More importantly, our experienced team will separate the real stories from those lame new “products” that aren’t worth your time.

Want more? You’ve got it — this year DVICE’s Twitter feed will post headlines as they happen. We’ll be tweeting live from the press conferences on Wednesday and from the show floor all week. We’ll also be giving away stuff via our Twitter feed, so keep checking our updates for a chance to win CES swag.

See you in Vegas — Geronimo!

Next week: DVICE does Japan

Next week: DVICE does Japan

Coming up next week is CEATEC Japan, a big-ass trade show in Tokyo that always has tons of cutting-edge tech on display. This year we’re extra excited about it, though, because we’re going to be live on the scene, raking up tons of hands-on coverage. We’ll also be trolling around Tokyo and Osaka, looking for any cool toys we can get our clumsy gaijin hands on. Watch this space for news from the Land of the Rising Sun starting Tuesday (really early), with even-more-current updates on our Twitter feed.

Full disclosure: Our coverage in Japan is coming to you courtesy of Panasonic, who is flying us out there to check out the show and their HQ. Just so we’re clear: We appreciate Panasonic’s generosity, but it won’t stop us from covering everything we can at CEATEC, and we’ll certainly be our usual skeptical selves toward all that we see, including Panasonic stuff. Just think of it as if we’re “embedded.”

17 amazing sci-fi themed cakes

Our friends at Sci Fi Wire managed to find 17 sci-fi themed cakes to celebrate the 17th birthday of Syfy. This AT-AT is incredible, but the sight of Borg Cubes, the Battlestar Galactica and — holy crap! — zombie Spider-Man, all created in baked glory really got us drooling.
