While we have seen some of the most intricate and impressive luxury watches inspired from the space theme, it seems to the time to take a quick look at those watches that were made on Earth and worn to space by the astronauts. The space age officially began 50 years ago when Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to journey into the outer space, and as a tribute, we have listed some of the watches that made their way into the space.

1. Omega Speedmaster

The manual winding Omega Speedmaster was worn during the first American spacewalk during Gemini 4 and it was also the first watch worn on the moon during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission. The Omega Speedmaster was strapped to Buzz Aldrin’s spacesuit when he landed on the moon.

2. Tag Heuer Stopwatch

When U.S. astronaut John Glenn piloted the Mercury-Atlas 6 “Friendship 7″ spacecraft on the first manned U.S. orbital mission in 1962, he was wearing a Heuer stopwatch Reference 2915A. To make it fit over the spacesuit, there were elastic bands attached to it. With the same, TAG Heuer became the first Swiss watchmaker in space.

3. Breitling Navitimer

This is the first watch worn by an American in space. Scott Carpenter wore his Breitling Navitimer on the Aurora 7 Mission on May 24, 1962. Moreover, it’s the first space watch featuring a 24-hour display. The company, at that time, decided to continue with the production of this model and named it Cosmonaute Navitimer.

4. Sturmanskie Sputnik

While the first watch on moon was an Omega Speedmaster, the very first watch worn to space was the Poljot Sturmanskie Sputnik, which was on the hands of Russian cosmonaut when he became the first human to journey into the outer space when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on April 12, 1961.

5. Strela chronograph

In 1965, when cosmonaut Alexi Leonov became the first astronaut to walk in space, he was wearing the Strela chronograph. He spent 12 minutes and 9 seconds outside the spacecraft. The watch was discontinued in 1979.

The ultra limited edition wristwatch is inspired by the Vostok space capsule, which successfully completed its test flight into space on March 25 1961, and will be auctioned off on April 12 itself at Sotheby’s in New York. The watch also features a 60-second orbital flying tourbillon that rotates counterclockwise around the dial counter in 108 minutes, to match the time Gagarin took to orbit the earth in the Vostok capsule.

3. Helios by Frédéric Jouvenot

The awe-inspiring Helios watch by Frédéric Jouvenot pays tribute to the cult of the sun in the ancient world. The enigmatic timepiece represents each hour by a radioconcentric sunbeam. The 12 sunbeams are designed on the dial in the sectors of a classic display. For the minutes, they are displayed in a central moon with an index that makes one revolution per hour. The dial of the Helios timepiece follows the passage of the sun. At noon, all rays blaze brilliantly, and the design represents the sun at its peak. The darkness of the face reveals the central area with an opening, which resembles the moon.

4. Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon

Although all the Patek Philippe watches are special, the over $1 million Sky Moon is special for a number of reasons. This double-faced wristwatch is one of the most complex wristwatches ever made. While one face shows the mean solar time and perpetual date, the other side displays a map of the night sky, the angular movement of the moon, the moon phases and sidereal time. The mechanical module for the astronomical indications on the sky-side dial was also awarded a Swiss patent.

5. Patek Philippe’s Ref 5106 Celestial wrist watch

An amazing piece of luxury, the “Only Watch 2009” Patek Philippe Ref 5106 features astronomical indications on the dial side and a date indicator. The self-winding wristwatch features a sky chart that indicates the night sky for the northern hemisphere, which rotates counterclockwise on its dial showing the angular progression of the stars relative to the meridian passage of Sirius. Simultaneously, the display shows the angular position of the moon, its phases and meridian passage. The watch comes in rose gold, with the bezel in 22k rose gold and the middle part of the watchcase and the caseback in 18k rose gold.

6. Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz 35th anniversary

Last year, Omega released its Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz 35th Anniversary watch, which was meant to celebrate the 1975 launch of the Apollo-Soyuz spacecraft. The dial was created from a meteorite which survived its entry into our planet’s atmosphere and the high-speed impact with the terrestrial surface. The black color of the meteorite dial is the result of a surface oxidation process. A limited edition of 1,975 pieces, the watch has on its caseback a motif of the two spacecraft with the names of the astronauts Lieutenant General Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand and Donald K “Deke” Slayton and the cosmonauts Lieutenant General Valeri Kubasov and Alexei Leonov.

7. Harry Winston Opus X

The Opus X watch by Jean-Francois Mojon for Harry Winston is inspired by the planetary movements and space-time continuum, capturing the shape and dimensionality of time through the synchronous rotation of circular motions. The watch uses a unique system of rotating indicators mounted on a revolving frame to display time. The whole operation takes inspiration from the celestial mechanics of the solar system. The hand-wound mechanical movement functions as a planetary gear train, consisting of solar wheel, satellite wheels, and frame. The indicators for hours, minutes, seconds and secondary timezone, are set on the individual satellite wheels, which orbit around the central, solar wheel.

8. Louis Moinet Astralis

The Louis Moinet Astralis watch features an astral Tourbillon, a split-second column-wheel Chronograph, as well as a 24-hour Planetarium displaying four meteorites boasting unique rarity. The 24-hour planetarium mechanism revolves once a day and successively displays four planets, embodied by fabulous meteorites. Louis Moinet is the first and only watch brand to present an authentic meteorite originating from the planet Mars.

9. Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck

An amazing astronomical timepiece, the Moonstruck from Ulysse Nardin simulates the rotation of the moon around the Earth, as well as the apparent movement of Sun around the globe. Thanks to its quick setting mechanism to adjust the time zone, the Moonstruck also displays the gravitational influences of the Moon and the sun.

10. Romain Jerome Moon Invader

An offspring of the famous Moon Dust DNA collection, the Romain Jerome Moon Invader watch is inspired by the Apollo 11, and its parts are actually made from pieces from the lunar lander. Pictured above is the RJ Moon Invader Collection Eminence Grise Automatic watch, which has its metal mesh dial made from the tire tread of lunar roving vehicles. The watches use blue SuperLumiNova for a striking night-time effect.

Every now and then we hear of most expensive drinks and to add to that list Bourbon-maker Woodford is up to sell mint julep for $1,000, all in the name of charity. The official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby is presenting it in the collaboration with Tiffany & Co.

According to the bourbon maker, 103 cups will be auctioned at the race with a starting price of $2,000 apiece. The auction will take place on May 7 race at Churchill Downs for a noble cause to rescue horses with the organization named Heart of a Horse.

The authentic silver cups has a base of 24 karat gold vermeil originally used by Tiffany & Co. on a horse racing trophy created by the famed jeweler in 1876. For those who would want to stick to silver, a limited stock of cups without the special gold detailing are also available for $1,000 apiece.

The cups will feature special and most expensive mint julep that has been custom made from round the world. The ingredients includes: A rare chocolate mint grown in San Diego, California; ice made of rainwater captured on the pristine island of Tasmania; sugar from the South Pacific; and selection of Woodford Reserve’s bourbon made by its master distiller. This is one of the star highlights of the Bonhams’ Space History Sale. Worn by cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, commander of the Soyuz 19 spacecraft, this space suit was manufactured by Zvezda.

2. Scott’s Lunar Surface Stopwatch

Estimate: $120,000 – $180,000

This stopwatch was used to time engine burns of the Apollo 15 Lunar Module Falcon. This timer was used to time the duration of the critical Descent Orbit Insertion (DOI) maneuver. The Bulova stopwatch has 2-inch main dial with second hand registering up to 30 seconds in increments of 0.1 second.

3. Strekalov’s Soyuz TM-10 Space Suit

Estimate: $60,000 – $80,000

This suit has spent 130 days in space. Soyuz TM-10’s flight engineer Gennadi Strekalov wore the Sokol KV-2 pressure suit, manufactured by Zvezda.

4. Movie camera from the Lunar surface

Estimate: $60,000 – $80,000

This is one of two 16 mm motion picture Data Acquisition Cameras carried on the Apollo 14 Lunar Module, Antares. The Flown Data Acquisition Camera, model 308A, was manufactured by J.A. Maurer Inc.

5. Michael Collin’s crew signed Apollo 11 emblem

Estimate: $60,000 – $80,000

This is the Flown Apollo 11 crew mission emblem that’s printed on Beta cloth. It is signed by the Apollo 11 crew – Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. Moreover, it’s inscribed by Collins above the emblem – Carried to the moon aboard Apollo XI, July 1969.

6. Flown PLSS strap, exposed to Lunar surface

Estimate: $40,000 – $60,000

This is the lower right side strap from Apollo 14 lunar module pilot Edgar Mitchell’s Portable Life Support System (PLSS). The strap has been signed and inscribed by Edgar Mitchell and it reads…This lower right backpack strap helped support my ‘PLSS’ during both of my moonwalks: Feb 5-6, 1971. Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 LMP.

7. Conrad’s Lunar Dust-embedded optical device

Estimate: $20,000 – $30,000

This is the Flown Apollo 12 COAS sun filter consisting of a 2-inch square metal frame, 1½ inch in diameter tinted glass, a small velcro tab and a 6 inch long strap with embedded lunar dust. This was was flown to the lunar surface aboard the Lunar Module Intrepid during the flight of Apollo XII.

8. Flown to the Lunar Surface, Lunar Surface checklist sheet

Estimate: $30,000 – $40,000

This is one of the most expensive set of notes recorded while on moon. These are the sheet numbered SUR-48 and SUR-49 from the Apollo 11 LM Lunar Surface Checklist. Along with it comes a typed letter signed by Buzz Aldrin, which reads…The entire checklist, including this sheet, was carried to the surface of the Moon in Lunar Module Eagle during the first lunar landing on July 20, 1969. This is one of the few sheets that actually has some mission notes made during our lunar surface stay.

9. Confirming the “First” Manned Space Flight

Estimate: $8,000 – $12,000

This is a very important document, as it should technically have proclaimed Alan Shepard’s flight as the first successful manned space flight. Alan Shepard was the first American in space.

10. Aldrin and the Lunar module

Estimate: $5,000 – $7,000

Another highlight from the Space History sale is this mounted and framed large color photograph of Buzz Aldrin shortly after deploying the seismic experiment left on the moon. It’s signed by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.

British billionaire Sir Richard Branson, who was lately in news for his Virgin Oceanic project, is now all ready to dress and serve as a flight attendant on Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia on May 1 after losing a Grand Prix bet with Tony Fernandes, the founder of the airline. If you would you like to have Sir Richard Branson as your stewardess in a sexy red skirt and blouse, you shouldn’t waste any time to book the ticket, which costs a cool £4,500 (about $7,320).

AirAsia is selling 130 tickets on the AirAsia X charity flight D7 08, from London to Kuala Lumpur. Sir Branson will serve coffee, tea or other beverages to Tony Fernandes and 250 other guests on the special 13-hour KL-bound flight. There is no return ticket. In case you opt for the cocktail evening and a hotel room, get ready to shell out an additional £700.

The Big Bet: Last year, Sir Richard Branson and AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes were promoting their Formula One racing teams – Virgin Racing for Branson and the Team Lotus for Fernandes respectively. They had made the deal that time that the owner of the team doing the worst in the F1 season would serve as a flight attendant on the other owner’s airline. Branson lost the bet to Fernandes in November.

Brooke Singleton of Dudley Singleton & Daughter hopes to make the most out of the Royal wedding season, as the auctioneer is handling the sale of royal bride-to-be Kate Middleton’s childhood home, where she spent the first 13 years of her life. The four-bedroom Victorian house in the village of Southend Bradfield, 48 miles west of London, will be sold on June 3, about a month after the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, which takes place on Friday, April 29 at Westminster Abbey.

The Victorian house, called West View, was bought by Michael and Carole Middleton in 1979, and future princess Kate Middleton, now 29, lived in the house after her birth in 1982 until 1995. Dudley Singleton, the auctioneer handling the sale in Pangbourne, said…

It’s always possible that someone will buy it as an investment, because if Kate becomes queen someone might even want to open it as a museum one day and charge people to see it.

There’s also a chance that someone could look to buy it as a holiday let, but if it sells to someone who just wants it as their home I’m not sure the royal connection will attract a huge premium.

The Kate Middleton’s childhood home is around 3 miles to Bucklebury on the famous Avenue of Oaks. Also nearby are Bradfield Sports Complex and 9-hole golf course. The Victorian house has an entrance hall with Victorian tiled floor, two reception rooms, kitchen, family room, utility room/cloakroom and four bedrooms. The approximate floor area is 1,420 sq ft.

For the super rich, the world is one big playground and they have the playthings to prove it. One of the Hong Kong’s richest businessmen, Ambrous Young (also known as Ambrose), has now put his 65-meter Ambrosia III luxury yacht up for sale, and he might have plans to get something bigger and better. Monaco-based brokerage firm Yachting Partners International is in charge of the sale of the yacht, which also happens to be the city’s biggest. As of now, the asking price hasn’t been disclosed. The yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six cabins, along with 20 crew members.

The custom built Ambrosia III has been done in a classic Art Deco style, and flaunts dark wood finishes and smooth curves. In the Stargate dining room, tiny fiber optic lights beautify the ceiling by imitating the constellations in the sky. Benetti Yachts crafted the 65m luxury yacht in 2006, and even at that time, the buying price was not revealed.

Created by BMW Individual as part of an exclusive partnership with New York-based piano manufacturer Steinway & Sons, the special edition 7er was launched at a special event in China. The 7-Series Steinway & Sons will be available in China in two versions – the V8-powered 740i and the flagship 760i with a 544HP twin-turbocharged V12 – priced at 1,798,000 Yuan ($275,000) and 3,198,000 Yuan ($489,260) respectively. The special edition is available in two color schemes that reflect the contrast between black and white, and are evocative of the piano keyboard.

The body features special paintwork, 20-inch alloy wheels and other inviting details. The gold-colored coachline running throughout the vehicle adds to the overall looks. The interior features high-quality leathers in either black with white linings, or white with black linings, Steinway & Sons logos and a custom audio system. Introduced recently at the Seoul Motor Show, the Chevrolet Mi-ray Concept aims to offer a fresh look at what sports cars of the future might be. The Mi-ray hybrid roadster was developed at the GM Advanced Design Studio in Seoul. The Mi-ray (Korean for ‘future’), which celebrates brand’s 100-year design heritage, combines superior hybrid propulsion technology and advanced styling. The Mi-ray is small and open like the 1963 Monza SS, and light and purposeful like the 1962 Corvair Super Spyder. Its aerodynamic fuselage is evocative of today’s jet fighters.

The jet-inspired roadster is made of carbon fiber and CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced plastic), with ambient lighting on both the sides. When the car is moving, this accent makes for a stunning line of light. You’d love to step inside the car through its Le Mans racer-style scissor doors. Chevrolet’s racing heritage is clearly noticeable inside the car. The interior, like exterior, draws inspiration from the jet fighters.

The Mi-ray flaunts brushed aluminum, natural leather, white fabric and liquid metal surfaces, for an overall effect of what they have called the ‘sculptural velocity’. Uwe Grebe, executive director for GM Powertrain Advanced Engineering, said…

Many of the components in the Mi-ray’s propulsion system are a logical extension of GM’s current technology portfolio. The concept shows the potential for reconfiguring, rescaling and extending today’s propulsion technologies.

The Mi-ray’s two front-mounted 15-kW electric motors are powered by a 1.6-kWh lithium-ion battery, which is charged with regenerative braking energy. The 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine combined with the electric motors makes for performance driving.

The Chevrolet Mi-Ray will probably not go into production, but it’s undeniably one of the stunning concept we’ve ever seen.

Few years ago when people use to talk about this super bus, hardy anybody believed that it could be a reality so soon. Wubbo Ockels a future visionary has got a boom in transportation and made a super bus that runs at a speed of 155 kmph a reality.

An eclectically powered Dutch Superbus can accommodate 23 passengers at a time and is powered by a 300kw engine and several lithium-ion batteries that make it Eco- friendly. The vehicle itself is made entirely of carbon fiber and fiberglass. This design was earlier conceive for the home country of Ockels but due to its non-economical approach he thought of launching it in Dubai as the country has immense cash flow. Eventually the concept was made for delicate roads but now it can move on the normal roads as well.

The luxury lover tourist can enjoy a ride between Abu Dhabi and Dubai from next week when it will be showcased outside Europe for the first time. This excellent project is a brain child of TU Delft University of Technology in Holland. This Superbus is said to tackle the problems such as pollution, congestion, safety with a high speed. Truly an invention of century !

We have already seen the Evo Mobil personal mobility system by Ora-Ïto for Citroën, and now, the French designer is all set for the world¬wide premiere an unusual experience based on the genetic transformations. During the Milan Design Week from April 12-17, 2011, Ora-Ïto will highlight its ‘Mutation’ family, which includes the Evo Mobil and the new UFO concept car for Citroën. Ora-Ïto has considered the codes, the DNA and the industry philosophy to modernize these two monumental sculptures.

• Evo Mobil by Ora-Ïto for Citroën:

The Evo-Mobil is the crossing of two typologies, a ma¬chine of the past and a current car. The concept draws inspiration from the first Citroën car. Baptized Evo Mobil, he creates a monotypic kind, which possesses only single species. The term genetic transformation is used to indicate an irreversible modfication of the genetic and hereditary information.

• UFO by Ora-Ïto for Citroën:

The UFO concept car by Ora-Ïto draws inspiration from an iconic car by Citroën. The vehicle is based on the fu¬ture of transport combined with one of the most famous cars in the world. The UFO has not been designed as yet another concept car but a genetic transformation to convey a universal message to the car industry through an artistic vision.

• Air Sculptures:

Ora-Ïto has also planned a monumental installation over the 476 meters of the Via Montenapoleone, one of Milan’s main streets. Inspired from the Citroën’s DS logo in 2D, the designer has created a 3D volume to represent these 8-meters architectural structures. These pieces of art seem to be floating in the air.
