In recent times movie theaters and television manufacturers have been banking on 3D, often with horrible results, but a new system that offers "touchable 3D" could be the virtual answer we've all been hoping for.

Most people have a drawer full of old empty ink cartridges. So the Ink and Media blog asked local artist Faith Pearson if she could come up with a good use for their pile of expensive trash. The result was these lovingly recreated scenes from classic science fiction movies, built using what most of us would normally throw away.

A massive 245-hectare fire near the town of Moapa, Nev., did $2.5 million worth of property damage in July and destroyed the Warm Springs Oasis , home to the little-known moapa dace ( Moapa coriacea ), an endangered fish that lives in the springs. But despite fears to the contrary, the fish were able to get out alive, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) reported. [More]

Clean up the Gulf in just one month, you say? A claim like that would normally have us rolling our eyes, save for the fact that we heard two magic words: "MIT" and "robots." Lots and lots of robots, all soaking up oil using a special technique.

3D has never really tickled my fancy, but I — and I suspect everyone else — could get down with an awesome holographic projection. Complex, Back to the Future 2-style holograms, like full-body teleportation and safe cloning, is something I figure won't happen during my lifetime. Apparently it could — in as little as 10 years.

Editor's Note: Students from Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering are working in Tanzania to help improve sanitation and energy technologies in local villages. The student-led group , known as Humanitarian Engineering Leadership Projects (HELP), will file dispatches from the field during their trip. This is their sixth blog post for Scientific American.
After hearing many rumors, we finally received confirmation that the famous Dr. Jane Goodall was actually in town to celebrate 50 years of chimpanzee research in Gombe National Park . This discovery came about after finding out that the Land Cruiser that we had reserved to drive to Kalinzi had been used to escort Dr. Jane Goodall to one of the villages. We took our unexpected delay with alacrity as we considered how incredible of an opportunity it was to be in the presence of a living legend. When we finally arrived in Kalinzi, we made our way past the cornucopia of emerald green bananas at the market to the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) field station, which would serve as our headquarters for the rest of the summer. Morgan Motor Company celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. Though the world is much different from when the company was first founded in 1909, Morgan still hand assembles every car it builds. It makes just a few hundred vehicles a year, but they are of the highest quality and are some of the most sought after cars ever built.
Despite the exclusive nature of the Morgan automobile though, the company must be admired for its ability to look forward. Hybrids, hydrogen-power, and electric cars are the future, and Morgan doesn’t plan on being left behind. They have announced that they will be building a diesel-electric hybrid car with a 1,000 mile range.
